You can thank Austrian inventor Josef Pallweber for the flip clock, conceived all the way back in the 1890's. To be honest, they never really took off in the marketplace, making sporadic appearances through the years...until the late 60's / early 70's. That's when the Japanese perfected flip clock design with the Copal Company, and for the next 15 years or so flip clocks were everywhere. Then came LED digital clocks, and once again the flip clock faded from the marketplace.
Well, they're back thanks to the retro revival, companies like Twemco, and their BQ-38 calendar flip clock.
It's worth noting the actual clock on this model is analog, but not a flip clock...it's the calendar that "flips"...day name, day number and month.
It uses 1 C size battery and so far keeps excellent time. I love the mid century modern orange styling and it's quite useful to have the day name and date prominently displayed.
There is, however, one oddity with this clock which kept me from giving it a 5 star rating.
If you look at the picture, you'll see it's 11:55 pm, but it's NOT January 1st of 2023. That picture was taken 5 minutes before midnight on December 31st of 2022; right after the calendar "flipped".
Not sure why it changes the day name, number (and, if appropriate, month) 5 minutes before midnight, but it does. Seems like it should wait until midnight, and then flip to the new day, but oh well...not the end of the world, but not quite right, is it?
Even so, I do like this clock and it does keep accurate time.

really dig this calendar clock, it's a fun color and is solid and well-built. i already owned a twemco flip clock in bright blue that i love (there's something really satisfying about that nostalgic flip action), but recently i found myself wanting a calendar that's similarly quick-reference, and finding this one was a happy accident. i hesitated at first because it's on the pricier side (around twice as much as the clock), but knowing how much i already liked the clock, as well as twemco's manufacturing quality, i decided to go for it, and am glad i did! it looks good and it works. thanks to these devices, checking the time and/or date is actually pretty enjoyable!
