Aug 7: Rockstars With Their Parents, Tamagotchis, a Nishika Promotional VHS and More

  1. This look-back at the September 24, 1971 issue of Life Magazine showcases portraits of rockstars. Check out Frank Zappa, Eric Clapton, Donovan and more stars with their parents in this heartwarming feature.
  2. The original Tamagotchi came out in 1997 and reportedly sold over 40 million units worldwide in the first year alone. Read about the history of the Tamagotchi and why owning a digital pet still scratches an itch for many in 2022. Convinced you need one? We have a whole selection on our site!
  3. Musician Philip Hsu is digitizing a large collection of mixtapes recorded in Shanghai in the 80s and 90s. Hsu started buying dozens of secondhand cassette tapes for the purpose of using them to make his own recordings, but quickly realized there was a treasure trove of known and unknown music already on them. The digital library with photos of the tapes is worth a browse!
  4. This promotional VHS tape for the Nishika N8000 3D camera is an absolute must-watch in its digitized form. Presented by none other than Vincent Price inside a wax museum, this video accomplishes the difficult task of explaining why someone would want three-dimensional photos (without actually showing an example of a three-dimensional photo.)

  5. While we're on the topic, if you're looking for a modern solution to 3D cameras, you'll want to check out the RETO 3D camera. Instead of lenticular prints, the photos are assembled into a gif for the three-dimensional effect.
