Dodes'ka-den (1970) is a Japanese drama film directed by Akira Kurosawa, featuring Yoshitaka Zushi, Kin Sugai and Toshiyuki Tonomura. The film presents interconnected stories of residents in a Tokyo slum, highlighting their struggles and dreams amidst challenging circumstances. Kurosawa's first color film, it received the Special Prize of the Jury at the 1971 Venice International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 1972 Academy Awards. Despite critical acclaim, it faced commercial challenges, impacting Kurosawa personally. The film's title, "Dodes'ka-den," mimics the onomatopoeia for a trolley's sound, reflecting the imaginative world of one of its characters.
