Kagemusha (1980) is a historical epic directed by Akira Kurosawa, starring Tatsuya Nakadai, Tsutomu Yamazaki and Kenichi Hagiwara. The film is set in 16th-century Japan during the Sengoku period and follows a petty thief (Nakadai) who is trained to impersonate the dying warlord Takeda Shingen (also Nakadai) to deceive rival clans. The narrative explores themes of identity, loyalty and the burdens of leadership. The film received critical acclaim, winning the Palme d'Or at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
