Ran (1985) is an epic historical action drama directed by Akira Kurosawa, starring Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Terao and Jinpachi Nezu. The film is a Japanese adaptation of Shakespeare's King Lear, set in 16th-century Japan. It follows aging warlord Hidetora Ichimonji (Nakadai) as he divides his kingdom among his three sons, leading to betrayal, madness and the disintegration of his family and empire. Renowned for its majestic scope, powerful imagery and exploration of themes such as power, loyalty and chaos, Ran is considered one of Kurosawa's masterpieces. The film received critical acclaim, winning the Academy Award for Best Costume Design and earning nominations for Best Director and Best Art Direction.
